Have you ever wondered whether donating money to charity makes you happier?

Lucky for us, there is a depth of research by experimental economists and social psychologists that might point us towards an answer.

Let’s first discuss the research that shows diving money away makes people happier…

Pro Happy — Giving Feels Good

Elizabeth Dunn, Lara Aknin and Michael Norton Dunn conducted a survey where they asked 682 Americas to (1) rated their level of happiness and (2) report how much they spent in a typical month on personal spending (that is bills and expenses, plus treats for themselves) and prosocial spending (gifts for others and…

Before we start, we want to say a huge thank you to the whole team that made FINZ possible. We want to recognise Michelle Berriman, Lu Budden, Karen Laverde, the FINZ board, Fi McPhee (for telling us about the event!), and the amazing fundraisers that made it a special few days.

So what was Chive, New Zealand’s first charity marketplace, doing…

A Coffee-shop Conundrum

Here at CHIVE, we are super curious about understanding how people can do good with the $$$’s in their pocket.

We’ve recently been scratching our heads over what problems charities and givers face around donations, and how we can solve them. We’ve done a fair amount of research (including our survey of 125 Kiwis) but decided it was time to share our understanding with a mentor of ours who is ace at building business strategies.

We met at our local cafe (shout-out to Urban Grind) and told him our story, our thoughts of what needs changing, and how we intend…

It’s a simple question, but there isn’t a simple answer. There are some fantastic reports on how people donate to charity in Aotearoa (particularly the New Zealand Support Report published by JBWere in collaboration with Philanthropy New Zealand), but little on why.

We’re not sure why this is, but we believe it's important to understand. New Zealand ranks 3rd on the World Giving Index and is the only country to feature in the top 10…
